I'm back...

Apologies for the MASSIVE post hiatus recently - there just hasn't been time as I've had exams and other such stuff.  Although I was rather pleased with the results:

English: 97%
German: 94%
French: 90%

Those were all very happy moments as I topped the year in all three!

In other news, Merls and I went to a local gymkhana two weeks ago and it was a great day out!  We did Best Veteran, Handsomest Gelding and the gymkhana, which turned out splendidly as we got a special, two fourths, three thirds and a second!  Photos soon.

I also visited the D-Day landing sites and cemeteries in Normandy, which was rather emotional, and whilst not the most upbeat of trips, I enjoyed it greatly.

Flooded!

I was really hoping to go out for a ride today but we've had minor flooding, so that wasn't a safe option :(

Why, oh why, oh why?!  I'm positively itching to go out for a hack!

What goes on in the horse world...

...apparently no longer stays in the horse world.  The media is now full of dumbed-down terms about horses, peaking around the Olympics, making them seem elitist to the public readers.  Similarly, the explanations of bute in the news surrounding the horsemeat scandal have been sketchy at best.  I think that, as the editor of a small scale equine magazine, we need to be careful in our explanations of horsey things to those who aren't familiar with them.

(Belated) Happy Valentine's Day!

A bit late, I know, but here's a late Happy Valentine's Day to all of you!  Cards to and from the horses, I hope?!

Working hard.

The straightness training is going well!  Merls is a really fast learner and seems to be loving it!

I'm still here!

Just to let you know I'm here, but with school, I don't have much to say!

Snow!

It’s been snowing and I got a day off school yesterday thanks to it.
It’s only about 4 inches deep and extremely powdery but the roads were maniacal yesterday although they’re better now.
Arthur quite likes it.

First post in a few days!

I haven't posted in a few days because I've had nothing interesting to share with you!  Or maybe that should be nothing that you would find interesting ;)

Today, I'd like to mention my new philosophy regarding riding:

Don't rush, don't force, and don't get angry.

I'd love it if you would reflect on that when you next ride.

Groundwork!

I started on Marijke de Jong's straightness training today!  Merls picked it up incredibly quickly and I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes.  It turns out he's a few years older than we previously thought, but doesn't act it, so we shall see.

Wish us luck, I'm really excited about it, and hopefully it'll rekindle his enthusiasm for schooling.

Homework-free weekend!!

Hooray!  I have no homework this weeked (I did it all at school), so I've been for a ride.  Merlin is doing very well and we're starting ground-based straightness training tomorrow; so is Jolly.  Wish us luck!

The art of dressage

Dressage is the art of putting one crooked body on top of another crooked body and making them both straight.

Worries of various natures.

Hey guys, don't bother reading this, I just want to mention it.

Firstly, I'm really worried about the school Talent Show auditions.  Having got in last year, I know i can do it, but I'm worried anyway.  I don't want to lose any confidence in myself having got into the band and stuff like that and I really enjoyed it last year and want that fun again.

Also, Merlin is not himself and we're getting the vet out to check him.  If that wasn't enough to fret about, Jols has now started coughing.  *sigh*

Wednesday 9 January 2013

A very boring update.

No riding for me today, it was pitch black by the time I got home!  No, I've been at school, doing work and learning things, as well as an extremely funny 'parody' of Room 101 done by our teachers.

Following school, I had my first singing lesson for a year, which was definitely worth doing!  It was excellent and I learnt a lot - I have certainly improved as a result!  My singing teacher is great, kudos to her!

Back at school!

I went back to school today, and although I love it, sadly it means less riding.  I'm hoping to go for a hack or two and/or have a lesson at the weekend, but until then, I'll be pretty bogged down with work, so don't expect exciting posts!

Jolly's Family Tree

Hello folks!  Well, I'm really interested in genetics and things like that, so I did a bit of research on Jolly's family tree.  If you keep going further and further back, you can get to the 1600s, and the Darley Arabian!

All the following pictures are screenshots from the All Breed Pedigree (allbreedpedigree.com)

Firstly, Jolly's immediated family:

This is what you get if you follow through Coed Coch Glyndwr:

And this is what you get if you follow through Bowdler Blue Boy:

Perhaps the most significant of her ancestors is Lyn Cwmcoed (both grandsire and great grandsire - yes, there's a lot of inbreeding) who was a Welsh Section A who was responsible for rebuilding the Section C branch.  Photos of him can be found on this brilliant website:

And to finish, a picture of Peachy :)

My life in saddles

Hi everyone!  Sorry for the lack of posting yesterday, I had nothing to say really!

Today, I'm going to show you my life in saddles!  As a horsey girl, saddles are a symbol of my equine life and I've had a few in my time; not one for every year, and I've almost certainly missed a few, but here's a short account of saddles in my life so far.

2000 - At this time, I had a Safari Colt saddle for riding our donkeys in.  It was a treeless little synthetic thing which was light enough to lift with one finger!  It had a little handle at the front instead of a pommel for little hands to hold on to if your noble steed decided to spook at something.

2007 - My sister and I got our first pony, Sweep, in 2007, and with him, a horribly uncomfortable 1960s gymkhana saddle in a rather ugly tan colour.  It was nigh on painful to sit on (it had hard leather sections which dug into your thighs - ouch!) and we were told by the saddler that it would probably be better hanging on a pub wall than on a pony!

Late 2007 - Jolly, my little black pony, was bought in late 2007 and came with a bridle (which she later swapped with Sweepie's bridle) but no saddle.  We bought a beautiful dark brown Olney saddle which was really comfortable and a real relief after the tan monstrosity!  Sadly, she doesn't fit it anymore - more about that later.  In late 2007, we also took Sweepie's old saddle (AKA the tan monstrosity!!) to a good trader in tack, riding wear and stuff where you can swap things that you want to get rid of for other items of roughly equal value.  Great!  It joined a saddle mountain in the back room there and we bought a good GFS black general purpose saddle, which was an absolute blessing!

Late 2009 - My Connemara, Merlin came with a big squashy Ideal which didn't really fit him - something had to be done.

2010 - It came to our attention that Jolly's Olney was sadly not fitting her anymore, so a black Wow saddle was purchased and customised to fit her with a foregirth which has worked wonders as any other saddles just slide straight up her neck as she has minimal shoulders and hates cruppers!  Merlin also received a treeless Dream saddle to replace his Ideal which was incredibly comfy :)  It was only temporary though, until we could find him a Wow of his own.

2011 - Merlin's Dream saddle was replaced by a second-hand 'green' Wow saddle with a suede seat.  I call it 'green' as the suede and leather, which were originally brown, had faded to sludge green.  Again, we intended to get him a new one which would be completely customised to fit him.

2012 - At Badminton, we visited the Wow stand and were given a 10% off voucher - the perfect excuse to finally get Merlin his ideal saddle!  It arrived later that year, in a lovely shade of deep red with black outlining.  It's so comfy - I love it!  And even better, it can be altered to fit Merlin's changing shape throughout the seasons.  Brilliant!

Team ACB - colours of the future?

Well, as you might know already, my dream is to ride at the Olympics!  I used http://www.snafflez.com/ to mock-up what my horses' smart show sheet and headcollar would look like.  Snafflez is a lot of fun to use and I enjoyed using it!

Here's to the future!

Dressage Books

I have a few books which I read recently/am currently reading to show you.  As well as horses and dressage, I LOVE reading, so dressage books are ideal!  I took the photos on our iPad purely to save space on my camera's card.  I'm afraid you'll have to crick your necks - I couldn't get them to rotate!

First up is Reiner Klimke's Cavaletti.  I was told by so many people that this is basically a dressage rider's bible, but I thought we only had the German version.  Imagine my excitement when I found an English version on our bookshelf!  It's a very helpful guide to the various exercises and gymnastic jumping, and I'm hoping most of it will be transferable to poles.  I'm looking forward to trying to trying it out.

This book, Dressage For The Young Rider by Peggoty Henriques.  I was a little dubious about reading this in the first place because it was written by the kind of instructor who I don't normally agree with, but I gave it a chance, and it's really good at explaining various movements.

Hmmm, difficulty.

I love this horse so much <3

But I'm struggling a bit.  He gets bored incredibly easily in the school and I'm not really sure how to keep his mind occupied whilst I school him.  He can be a bit strong-willed if he isn't keen on cooperating and I don't want to get into a fight with him.

Any suggestions?

What to blog about... What to blog about...

I've been trying to do a blog post every day, but I genuinely can't think of anything to say!

If you're bored, I suggest you have a look at my sister's Breyer videos - she's getting quite good at them.  She's really into film and acting and stuff like that so show her some love, guys!

Now, the next one is written and directed by little old me ;)  But all the editing and filming and some of the voices are by my sister.

Maybe I'll actually think of something to post tomorrow...

New Year's Day

I think a few of my pets were up at New Year's Eve parties for a bit too long last night...  Look how tired they are!

Yaaaaawn!

Vento's a sleepy horse.
Raven isn't keen on getting up!
Magic and Peachy have decided not to argue and have fallen asleep on my bed.

Jolly's quite happy to have a snooze in her stable.

But Arthur is full of energy!
